One of my favorite role playing systems is Savage Worlds by Pinnacle Entertainment. It's based off of one of the games I played in college: Deadlands (technically we played the Hell on Earth variation of Deadlands).
If you're looking for a versatile system,
this is quite the workhorse. With one book, a deck of cards, and a handful of dice, you can use the system to go anywhere.
Outer space? Easy. The Spanish Main? Of course. Super heroes? It's a breeze.
Why do I love this system so much? Besides being versatile, when I said the number of books you need to own is one (literally the Adventure Edition). I might be a little biased because my name is on the back of the book with a quote from when I worked at Geek and Sundry.
Initiative is done by a deck of cards with the Jokers left in (because they are both good and bad to get). This keeps combat moving at a fast clip instead of bogging down the game.
Do you suffer from horrible dice luck? Use a Bennie (most people use poker chips as their Bennies) to reroll your dice, recover from being shaken, soak some damage, or just influence the story in such a way that benefits your group.
If you don't want to drop a ton of money on every setting out there, your fellow gamers have you covered. This system is so popular that a lot of people have "savaged" other systems. Meaning they've done all the hard work of making space wizards with laser swords work for the system.
If you couldn't tell from my initial image, the Kickstarter for the newly updated Deadlands just hit my hot little hands. So I'm going to be spending the next couple of weeks devouring the content. I have to say after cracking the shrink wrap, I am super impressed by the work Pinnacle has put into these boxes.
If you're in the market for a new game to introduce to your group, I would highly suggest checking out Savage Worlds.
